[Travel tips in Korea] #4. Seoul metro & a subway line map

Hello stranger!

I manage this blog for you who want to travel in Korea. I don’t have any relations with travel agency. I write this blog by myself during my spare time, so maybe some information is not  correct. (Including My English..)

So when you refer to my blog, please check the update date to know it’s the latest news or not. Also, if my information is not correct, please let me know. I will check it!

Thanks!

What is the most convenient transportation in Seoul?

I think the best is a subway. Obviously, taxi is the most comfortable but I heard that some taxi drivers still overcharge tourist. So I do not recommend.
(One of my Japanese friend took a taxi to go to Myung-Dong. But taxi driver let off him in Nam-san mountain. Damn swindler!!!)

If you take a subway you can save your time. Coz Korea subway comes on time.

1. Fare

The Metro transit fare is set to a distance scale that unifies all of the metropolitan subway sections.
(Based on the shortest traveling distance).

Normally, the subway fee is 1,050won.(KRW). It’s about $0.95
>> 2013-07-30. Standard exchange rate

If you go to more than 10Km you have to pay 100won as an extra charge.
- Between 10km and 40km : Additional 100won per 5km
- Over 40km : Additional 100 won per 10km

The Metro transit fare is set to a distance scale that unifies all of the metropolitan subway sections.

ClassificationTraffic CardSingle Journey Traffic Card
Adults* Basic Fare : 1,050 won up to 10km

* Additional Fare
  - Between 10km and 40km : Additional 100won per 5km
  - Over 40km : Additional 100 won per 10km

* But, if you are using the inner suburb section and those
  non-suburb sections (Gyeongbu Line~Chonan)
successively, the fare for the inner circle will be charged
first followed by an additional 100 won for every 4km of the
  non-suburb sections you have travelled.
Additional 100 won on the
traffic card fare
Youths
(aged 13-19)
20% discount on the regular adult fare minus 150 won / Basic Fare: 720 won No discount (adult single ticket price)
Children
(aged 6-12)
50% discount on the regular adult fare minus 150 won / Basic Fare: 450 wonCharge of an additional 50 won on the basic fare for children’s single journey tickets

2. How to buy a ticket?

Every station has a couple of ticketing machine. They serves English, Chinese and Japanese, So you can check the language as you want.

For you are understanding, I tried to use a ticketing machine in the station.
You can find this machine very easily. Touch English button!

 It's English Version.

1)  Minimum Fare only
It's the base rate(1,050won). If you're destination is very close (only 2~5 stations), you can choose it. But if your arrive station is further than 10 km, you can't not go out at your destination. Ticket machine will be alarming very noisily. (I very often see a foreign traveller can't get out with this problem.) If you face to this problem, you have to pay additional fee.

2) 1 single journey
when you use a subway very few times, it's better to use it. (All routes)
According to your destination's distance, they calculate a subway fare.

3) Free ticket
If you are 65years or older than 65, you're free.

4) Transit card
If you have a plan to travel in Seoul over than 1 month, it will be a good choice.
Before, you should buy a T money card. (http://www.t-money.co.kr/jsp/tpub/help/visit/foreigner.jsp)

Actually I can't not understand what is a station code. Is there a code?
I don't have a idea. ㅡ..ㅡ
Better to check the arrive station's name.

I selected the City Hall station. Top of the screen you can see.
According to the number of persons, select the number of tickets. If you have a children 6 to12 years old, he can get discount.

I checked 1 person. Automatically, it shows the total price.
And insert the fare and deposit fee of 500 won. The ticketing process will start, and the single journey traffic card will be issued. After you get off at your destination place your single journey traffic card on the deposit payment return machine and 500 won will be refunded.
Do not forget it! You don’t need to donate to Seoul metro.
Still want to donate? Oh. Such a good man!!!

※ Prepaid traffic cards need to be recharged, and passengers are able to use them until the balance has been exhausted. Deferred payment traffic cards will include your public transportation usage fee on your credit card bill.

3. The way to read the subway map.

Up-to-date, full-sized subway maps and pocket-sized maps in Korean, English, Japanese and Chinese are available free of charge at ticket windows and subway station offices on Seoul Metro Lines 1 to 4.

Here! You can download English, Chinese and Japanese versions of maps

[Download maps]

<line 2 map>

The way to read the map is no difference.

There are 9 lines. When you’re travelling, you usually get number 1, 2, 4 lines, I suppose.

Just be careful when you have to transfer to the other line. Only you have to do is check the line color and follow the arrow on the directional sign.

Plus, airport railroad is very fast. If your suitcase is not heavy or big and you don't need to get a transfer, it will be a nice choice to get on the railroad train to come downtown of Seoul. It's up to you.

If you want to more info about subway, you can read another posting.
Also you can ask to me whatever!!!

Your comment will give me an energy!!

It's a very small tip.But I think it'll help you a lot.
In 2007, Seoul City has introduced a 120 call system for Korean.
At that time, it was very sensational. I used a lot.

(I was born in Cheon-an. So when I moved to Seoul, I didn't know many things)

★ Intrduce about 120 call center

Are you experiencing living difficulties in Seoul due to the language barrier? The Happy Call Service for Foreigners will make your life in Seoul easier and happier.
The 120 Dasan Call Center will offer the "Happy Call Service for Foreigners" starting in April 2011. Our English-speaking counselors will call you once or twice a week to provide useful information on everyday life in Seoul.
Fill out the following application form and the 120 Dasan Call Center counselors will make you feel at home with their friendly counseling services on diverse matters.

You can ask everything. Especially about the location or transport etc.
For example..

" I want to go to 63 bulding from seoul station. How can I get there? Taking a taxi is the fastest way?

"Could you tell me the bus number which is from Cityhall to Insadong?"

They answer everthing. Even though you ask below things..

"How high is the HanRa mountaiin?"
"My girlfriend is angry. How can I calm down her?"
"I make a bet with my friend. Which one is bigger between magpie and crow?"

I can't believe that someone ask that kinds funny things could ask. But,they did.

Of course,
I don't want you to ask a question of no value.

But, When you have a problem on your journey, you can use this call service.
Also If you meet a bad taxi driver, you can call them. They accept complaint.
Or you lost your luaggage on the bus, if you remeber the bus number, arrived bus stop name, they will help you.

For foreigner, the number is  120 + 9

If you have a chance to use this call service, plz let me know it is whether to useful or not. Write a comment!! Thx ^^
